Otis Allen Jeffcoat, III
OTIS ALLEN JEFFCOAT, III, is an attorney and owner of the Jeffcoat Law Firm, LLC, Attorneys at Law, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, and Pawleys Island/Litchfield Beach SC, and Calabash, NC. Mr. Jeffcoat received his AB degree in Politics magna cum laude from Princeton University in 1970, and his JD degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1973. In law school he was a member of the South Carolina Law Review, served as its Survey Editor, and was editor of the law school newspaper. Mr. Jeffcoat was licensed to practice law in South Carolina in 1973 and in North Carolina in 1993.
Since 1973, Mr. Jeffcoat has been in private practice, concentrating in the fields of real estate, estate planning, environmental law, corporate law, construction litigation, foreclosures and general civil litigation. Mr. Jeffcoat represents developers, realtors, lenders, governmental agencies of all types (federal, state and local) and homeowners associations in condominium and planned unit developments, timesharing developments, commercial real estate ventures, contract matters and in litigation arising in these areas. He also assists clients with Estate Planning and Probate matters.
Mr. Jeffcoat is a member of the South Carolina Bar, the North Carolina Bar, the Horry County Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He served three terms as Chairman of the Real Estate Committee of the Horry County Bar Association and has served as Chairman of the Real Estate Practices Section of the South Carolina Bar. He is a member of the Elder Law Committee of the South Carolina Bar. He is a member of the Grand Strand Area Estate Planning Council and has served as a Director and Vice President of that organization. Mr. Jeffcoat has been a member of the governing council of the Natural Resources Section of the South Carolina Bar. He is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, Inc. and the Horry County Probate Court Advisory Committee.
Mr. Jeffcoat has spoken to lawyers, developers, realtors, governmental agencies and other trade and civic groups in these areas and in the areas of current problems in real estate development, including leasing issues, hazardous wastes, wetlands regulation, beachfront management issues and other environmental matters. Mr. Jeffcoat has also testified in state and federal court as an expert witness in the areas of real estate restrictive covenants enforcement and commercial leases, real estate closing, marketable title to real estate, title examinations and the real estate attorney's standard of care and applicable ethical requirements. He also supports the firm's litigation attorneys in their work in construction defects law and community association law.
In 1989, South Carolina Governor Carroll Campbell appointed Mr. Jeffcoat to his Freshwater Wetlands Forum, a 37-member statewide task force, to make recommendations for statewide legislation dealing with freshwater wetlands regulation.
Mr. Jeffcoat donates a significant amount of his professional and personal time to non-profit causes, including the South Carolina Bar (CLE Speaker), YMCA of Coastal Carolina, The Nature Conservancy, Princeton University, Rotary Club of North Myrtle Beach, Waccamaw Community Foundation and his church.
Mr. Jeffcoat is married and has two children. His wife, Mary, served eight years on Myrtle Beach City Council, served almost 10 years as Director of Communications and Information for the Catholic Diocese of Charleston, and now serves as media advisor to Mepkin Abbey Trappist Monastery in Moncks Corner, SC. Mr. Jeffcoat and his family have lived on the Grand Strand since 1977.
